Hi Carol,
I have a question regarding your new product line. Do you carry a product that is RAW and contains some type of sunscreen? What is your view on this? Being new to the raw world, I am confused as to whether I should take a Vitamin D supplement, go “raw” in the sun (not naked just sunscreen-less) or use sunscreen. Please help.

Hi Karen,
Sunscreen goes into the realm of the FDA. If skin care is not governed by the FDA, you need to be careful what products you use on your skin.
We do not as yet have a sunblock. (what does she mean?) That is a complicated process and one that needs to be done correctly.
For the time being, I use something I got from David Wolfe.
I do not recommend that you go into the sun without protection. I would not do it so I would not tell you that it is OK to do.
Hope this helps!

Carol,
You truly are an inspiration. I have “Eating in the raw” and “the Raw 50.” I began following some of the raw food regimes about 5 years ago and purchased my Vitamix in ‘07. The vitamix is awesome in that it is inexpensive, allows easy clean-up and the MOSTLY –the best method to use to follow a raw food plan. I am a school teacher, realtor and a huge advocate of the pilates method, so as you can probably summize, it’s difficult for me to find time for preparation —thus, this works very well.
I recently saw that you have started a skin care line. Is there a way for me to try some samples? I would also love some additional literature. Previously, I used the line called, Nelly De Vuyst, but that have recently changed the line and thus, now time to try a new one. Since I have very sensitive skin, I always like to start with samples.
You are a huge inspiration! I hope that you continue on your journey in your career as a model, actress and health advocate. You enlighten so many people with your knowledge, talents and beauty.
Thank you so much!
Ainsley

Hi Ainsley,
The best way to try our product is to order it and if you do
not like it, just return it to us.
HSN is having a sale right now so if you like it, you can
get our product at with some savings.
My company is only 1 year old and since we were exclusive with HSN, and they have the 30 day money back guarantee, my partners decided not to make samples.
Sorry about this. Hopefully one day we will be able to afford to do this.
I hope you still decide to try our line. it is all CHEM-free and we get great results. My sister’s skin is soooooo sensitive and I try everything out on her!
Just an FYI!
Thanks for writing,
CA

Love your philosophy and will try all your products. We hope you develop a sunblock or sunscreen product ASAP. We live in Las Vegas and “natural” products that meet up to my standards are rare. I’m a semi-retired primary health care provider who has always recommended that people always avoid putting toxic materials on their skin; also I’ve been a fan of nontoxic and raw for decades. In our climate protection from the sun is imperative from May through November every year, and our solution is to bring extra clothing to cover up, but that is not always practical or comfortable in the high heat here.

I found a sunblock on David Wolfe’s site: Nature’s first law or Sundiet.
As I trust David, I did not exactly research this myself. I rarely use block. I prefer hats!
LOL. Perhaps being a primary health care provider, you can look it up and research it and tell me what you think? I am always happy to have research as much research as possible as no one is perfect!
Thank you in advance!

Dear Carol
I would like to share my story with you in the hope that you will grant my request.
My husband’s name is Glynn and he is the best husband I could ever have hoped to have. I am disabled and have been ill now for over 15 years, which is a large chunk of my life, as I am only 43,there is no cure for my problems. I met Glynn 9 years ago after my first husband couldn’t cope with my illness and we divorced.
Glynn is such a caring, loving and unselfish man; he not only became my husband but also Step-Dad to my two daughters and they love him to bits although as typical teenagers they have caused many problems but he has always been there for them. He has brought such happiness and contentment into a life that appeared to have no purpose whatsoever other than being here for my children. He has given me reason to live for myself. He works very hard as an Airport based manager and his job is definitely stressful but the minute he comes home all his attention is given to me. He often surprises me with weekends away and arranges nights at the theatre etc. He is my carer and never lets me get down or depressed. Especially when he has to dress me and bathe me during bad attacks. He always manages to get me to smile.
Sadly at the moment both our Father’s have got cancer. My Dad’s has been caught very early and isn’t as serious at the cancer Glynn’s Dad has. Glynns dad has got stomach cancer. Glynn is my rock but it is very difficult at the moment, he is very depressed as not only has he got me to look after, but now this terrible illness of his dads, he is understandably sad and worried, I think Glynn feels he is at the end of the line, and I feel unable to help him. I know he is in inner turmoil, although he never mentions it. Now this you would think would be the end of it, but to top things off our twenty-year-old daughter has just returned home to us after a failed marriage and she is pregnant. I wasn’t too sure how Glynn would take this, but Glynn being Glynn he has said ” well we need to make the best of it “ and has risen to the challenge, moving the bedrooms around to make room for her and her due baby, our house is fit to bust, I am very proud of him.
I so much want to bring a smile back to my husband’s lovely face if only for a few moments. Then I thought I would write to you to try to lift Glynn a little as he is a huge fan of yours, he has countless photographs of you and collects any info about you wherever he can, he never misses a programme he knows you are in.
Glynn always says you are one of the most talented and attractive women of our generation. I would be so grateful if you could send him a signed photograph of yourself, wording it something like “To Glynn with love and then your signature.
Please don’t think this is just another letter to obtain some free photographs, Glynn is a true fan of yours. I understand you must receive many requests like this, many of which im sure are complete fakes, and some people will take advantage of this terrible illness, but I am completely genuine and I hope you will understand my plea and grant my request. This would be so personal to him and such a surprise that not only would it bring a smile to his face but also show him that he is not alone in his sadness and that his wife loves him very much.
I understand you are very busy and I may not get an immediate response but I will be forever grateful if you could do this for me.
I wish you every happiness and success in your life.
Kind regards

Hi Carol!

I was wondering how much of your radiant, healthy glow is from eating properly and how much you can attribute to your new skincare line. Paula,
WOW! what a great but complicated question! Not sure I know the exact answer but I will answer from my heart.
I felt terrible BEFORE I went RAW. I thought my career was over. RAW food helped me regain my energy, health, joy, spirituality and figure!!
The body is not able to be sectioned off. as everything started to look better and feel better, I realized I was poisoning myself with the skin care I had been using. Everything you put on your skin has a chance of getting into your skin and then into your blood stream.
So I thought, it is important that if I were cleansing my body of the impurities that are making me tired, sick and old, then I would have to eventually make sure I was not putting all those toxins back in with my skincare.
Does this help?
My skin really started to pick up when I started to do my own stuff in my kitchen. It was really the piece of the puzzle that was missing!
Wishing you success in your RAW food endeavors!

I survived colon cancer in 1992 I was given 1 to 2 years to live but here I am 2009 still loving life and helping others to recover from cancer, I saved my life by flooding my body with raw vegetable juices, years of making juice for other cancer survivors has proved to me that nutrition works for any type of illness, it did take me 6 month to be cancer free but I’ am now sharing my story with hundreds of other people who are surviving Sevier illnesses, if you just give your body a chance to heal it well, remember you our a living person, so to heal you must put live foods into your body, I’m passing on this info because carol’s store is one many that just goes to show that live foods well give you back your youth, and your life, the juice that I make is designed to rebuild the immune system, and flood your system with live enzymes, only found in live vegetables, it sounds like that is how carol lives here life, and from were I’m looking it is working. The juice that I have been designing for the last 15 years is nothing less then a miracle from God, not me, I’m only the vehicle to pass on what I have learned, all the vegetables are organic grown in Oregon we cold press the veggies into juice then micro filter the juice then flash freeze the juice, so you can keep your juice for months, and when you want a bottle all you have to do take it out and reactivate the live enzymes buy defrosting. You can do this same process but on a smaller scale, if you have a juicer, juice your veggies filter your juice with cheese cloth and put your juice into glass jars and freeze. I hope this help. kenny

Hello,
My name is Marilyn Rosenberg and I live in Everett, WA. I have been
eating raw since December 2008. Before that I struggled with making a
full commitment to a raw diet.
About 1 ½ years ago, after some genetic testing, I found out that I have
a rare cancer syndrome called Gardners Syndrome. Gardners Syndrome is a genetic disorder characterized by the presence of multiple polyps in the colon together with tumors outside the colon. The extracolonic tumors may include osteomas of the skull, thyroid cancer, epidermoid cysts, fibromas and sebaceous cysts. The countless polyps in the colon predispose to the development of colon cancer.
My grandmother, mother and one of my 2 sisters also have it.
I have decreased the number of polyps that I have (from hundreds to around 20) in a period of 3 months. I attribute this directly to my raw diet. My younger sister doesn’t eat very healthily and at this point she has had her colon, uterus, and one ovary removed.
I will be going to MD Anderson in Houston, TX with my sister for her next exam. MD Anderson is one of the largest cancer clinics in the world and very well known for the work that they do. They do many studies on different drugs to help people with cancer and I’m hoping to get them interested in looking at how a raw food diet may give the body the opportunity to heal itself.
I have talked to my sister’s doctor a few times and she is willing to put some time aside for me in order to review other people’s cases on how a raw food diet has made them cancer free. I was told by the doctor that if I could bring to instances of people who no longer have cancer due to a raw diet, they would look at them.
They also informed me that they do not know any other person in their 40s with this syndrome who has decreased the number of polyps or still has their colon. So now they are very interested in talking with me. If I can get their attention with my testimonial and others, perhaps they will look at this other approach.
If you or anyone you know can get me in contact with someone cancer free now due to a raw diet and is still eating raw I would really appreciate it.
If you would like more information do feel free to contact me. I was trying to sum it up without getting too wordy.
I will be at MD Anderson from August 30-September 4, 2009. I hope to be in contact with some raw food cancer survivors in the next few weeks in order to compile success stories.
Please feel free to forward this letter to anyone who you think could help me.
Thank you for your time.

in any case, I had written my book about raw food an added some testimonials. one in-particular would have helped you–the one about Donny Good. the book is the RAW 50 it is in your library (or else request it)
Dr. Nicholas Gonzales has a site and he works with people with cancer and he gets amazing results with food and supplements. He did the foreword to the RAW 50 and he sited many of his cases and their amazing results!
In my view, he is the best in the world. You should look him up on the web.
This may also help you to keep your course and give you confidence in your choice.
Raw food helped me in my battle too!

Nicole,
any time i am stumped by a question, i turn to the internet. There must be some doctors listed under RAW FOOD advice, nutrition, or counseling; something in your area where you can start. My writers all like to go online to a raw food posting center when ever they are looking for something.
I do not like to recommend Doctors as someone who is good for one person may be not so good for another.
I will post a question on my site and we will see who answers.
hope this helps.

i am so glad you took the bull by the horns (figuratively speaking, of course!) and did something to better your life! i am so glad you got great results, too!
as for your question:
ummmmm, this is a hard question because it is a matter of preference. there is not just one type of machine used by raw foodies. i mean, it depends on what you need.
how much you want to make? how much do you and your family and your friends eat? (i am sure friends will want to try your great cookies etc)
however keep in mind that the bigger the dehydrator, the longer it takes to dehydrate something.
keep up the good work,

depending on how the skin care does and what the demand for FAB chemical-free skin care with great results is (I could not resist a commercial there!) we will keep going and make what ever we can.
however, that will take some time- we cannot even keep up with the demand for the skincare. we are selling out everywhere! that is good, but it keeps us busy!

Hi Carol
What an amazing life you have had, I was born the same year , also in Flushing Hospital. I waned to write for a long time but never did this before. I was very touched by the news article that was done on you and your ex and the problems which would not let you have a baby. I have learned that life takes us in directions we could never imagine.
I have a copy of an email I sent to the foundation that was established in your brother honor. We work with children in the New York area.
If you could help us in any way it would be greatly appreciated as we are always doing fund raising to help families careing for sick children
(letter to the foundation)
I understand the good work in honoring a friend and raising money.
I would like to request your assistance and tell you about our small organization.
We started 20 years ago, my wife and I were looking to have our 2 child. After a perfect pregnancy things went very bad during the delivery and after a loss of blood and oxygen our daughter was left very frail and we had no idea what to do. We didn’t know how to care for her home and there were no facilities that could care for her in the down state area. After 6 months in the hospital we brought her to a hospital in Connecticut where she dies after her first birth day. It was horrible to have her far away and to have no help.
This situation changed me forever. I have spent the last 20 years helping on other families.
The children we work with are referred to as children with special health care need that are medially frail, chronically ill or living with a life threatening illness. We hit a new mile stone in 2008 by helping 400 children in a year. We assist families with home care and we also have two homes , first of there kind, where the children can live. This becomes an great alternative for children living in a hospital or a nursing home or cannot be cared for at home anymore.
We would appreciate any assistance you maybe able to offer. I would love to tell you more about our work.

in any case, i believe it is 4 hours as the nuts get kinda mushy any longer than that!

Hi Barbara,
Yes, they sure are pasteurized.
I am not sure where to get them so that they are 100% safe.
but, I have found that by going on the web and looking around for FARMS–going right to the people who grow them- has helped me when I needed something and could not find whatever it was anywhere else.
or else going to raw foodie stores-where they sell to raw foodists and find out where they get their’s is also a good idea.
I hope this sets you off in the right direction…
Best always,

Dear Carol
My name is Diane and I am 13 years old and I live in the United Kingdom. My mum died when I was 10 years old and I have lived with my dad ever since. He is a fantastic dad and looks after me really well; he still manages to work through the day while I am at school, and looks after the house and me in the evening. He cooks, cleans, washes, irons, and takes me on holiday sometimes when we can afford it. When it was my birthday he had a party for me and I asked all my friends around, they all love my dad too. He is so cool; he knows all the trendy bands and TV shows. He never has any time to himself; he is still doing housework late at night when I am in bed. I go to bed at 10pm.Both me and dad miss mum very much, I know we can never bring her back, but she is in our hearts and memories, dad says she will always be alive if we think about her.
Now we have found out that my Granddad has got cancer, he is 74 years old. My dad is very upset but he tries not to show it, but I know he is, I am upset too. My dad says he fancies you a lot, and you are his most favourite model ever so I thought it would be a good idea if I could write to you and ask you for a signed photograph for my dad, as this will cheer him up.
My dads name is GLYNN, and I want to ask you if you will please send him a signed photograph of yourself . I hope my letter reaches you and I hope you can help me. I think you must get loads of fan mail, so I hope I will be lucky.
Love
Diane Sparks, UK. (Age 13)

ps i actually use the face wash on my hair and use a conditioner just on my ends to keep the chemicals from the conditioner away from my clean scalp.
this works for me, and i am not telling you it will work for you, but it you HAPPEN to get face wash in your hair, try NOT to use the chemical conditioner too close to your scalp (LOL)

My question is simple, the parfait in your hand on the cover of the book, and the dish that is directly behind the tomatoes on the cover—what recipes do they correspond to in the book? They look so delicious. I can’t figure out what either of them are. Please help.

Hi Prachel Carter,
The parfait is on page 152 under the desserts heading in the book “Eating in the Raw” and since it is a mix of a couple of recipes, the recipe on 152 sends you to the cream on page 155 and the granola on page 127.
I must confess, it has been four years since we shot the cover and the other dish alludes me as we moved them around during the shoot; but it does look like one of the pasta dishes. (pages 150 and 151 under Entrees).
We could have put the Portobello stroganoff over the summer squash pasta.
Forgive me, but this is the best I can do…
Hope this helps.

Hi Sharron,
I have apologized over the years for this as i had a deal to do the site when i wrote the book and subsequently it fell apart but the book had already gone to print. very stressful….
then i had hoped to put all the people i buy from on to my site just to give reference- but man, that has taken forever, too.
so i just took to telling people where they could find my FAVs:
salt—powerorganics.com
Naturesfirstlaw.com has a ton of stuff even sunscreen, honey, coconut oil, dried fruits olives olive oil etc.
i love a carmelized nut mix from good stuff from mom and me–not sure what their site is but they also have cookies. their number is 1-888-797-6865 in case you don’t mind calling…..
rawpickles.com has sauerkraut and pickles
oneluckyduck.com has ice cream ans well as cookies and all kinds of stuff.
i hope this points you in the right direction.
if there is something specific, just ask me….i THINK oneluckyduck has oatmeal, i know they make oatmeal cookies. if not maybe they can tell you where you can purchase it.

Hi Mike!!!!!
Of course, the washes are made with a uni-sex scent of lemon, orange and lime that i am told by my male friends is just great, not feminine. By the way, they ALL LOVE to shave with it. It is soothing to the skin and gives a smooth shave; I know cause I use it on my legs. The regular moisturizers also have that same scent and the anti-aging is a vanilla/lavender. We use tamanu nut and it has a pungent aroma. We are still looking for the scent to cover it. Since we don’t use chemicals, we have to do this in a natural way; and since the tamanu nut is a sacred nut and works WONDERS, I don’t want to take it out. So, if you get the anti-aging for mature skin, get the results and bare with us on the scent?
Thanks for asking…
All the best,

Hi Tamela,
I understand your complaint, and I want you to read all of this reply because you are not going to like what I first say to you: you need to see someone who knows the raw diet because I do not know what you are eating on a daily basis. You gave me no specifics in your email.
But anyway, I can only tell you some of the mistakes I have seen other people make,
but they may not apply to you. So, again, as I do not know your specifics, and I am not following what you are doing everyday, like a Dr. would, I can only guess in general terms.
So here it goes…
First of all, I have found people starting this diet, eat a lot (i did too) as the body figures out that it is being fed healthy food and it takes what it needs. Then, at a certain point, it just stops. My sister ate like this for two weeks. I did too.
So since you have been doing RAW for two weeks, you should soon stop and slow down. Your body SHOULD do this on its own but, again, I am not a doctor and I am not following your case specifically, I am only guessing. I mean, if you are accidentally eating cooked and don’t know it and you are eating a lot of it, that could be a cause of weight gain.
The problems within eating a lot like this, is if you are not eating really all raw foods, the body will not slow down as quickly. So check and double check that you are eating raw foods and not some processed foods that PASS for raw. For example, not all olive oils are cold pressed. Is yours?
Cold hummus from the store is COOKED. Are you eating that instead of the recipe in my book?
Is your salt an average table salt(cooked) or are you using table salt when you go to restaurants? This can cause water weight.
Are you eating salads with commercial dressings? bottled and salad bar dressings are COOKED.
Cooked is hidden everywhere in cold foods. Are you SURE you are all raw?
My guess is since you are still having wine at night, you may not be getting all raw because wine is sugar and if you were raw, you would not need sugar. You would be too well fed. Again, I am guessing.
Are you eating TOO MUCH of one thing? too much of, say, avocados can cause weight gain. You know, too much of a good thing. You need to eat a WIDE VARIETY of stuff, but some people, like me for example, like certain things and eat the same things over and over. The body needs a variety of nutrients from a VARIETY of sources. I made this mistake myself. I have to remember to curb myself.
These are just a couple examples of the many reasons you might be gaining weight. You know, there is not enough space here to give you all the reasons or to list all the possibilities.
Also, since I do not know you or what your normal (AMA guideline for normal adult female weight chart) weight is supposed to be, are you really TOO THIN and your body is normalizing out by gaining? maybe you think you are over weight?
Again, I am not saying you are or you are not, it is just that I have no info to go on.
Oh, and one more thing, you did not say HOW you know you are gaining weight. Are your clothes tighter or are you weighing yourself?
muscle is heavier than fat so if you are working out and eating raw, you will make muscle and reduce fat. You would then weigh heavier but be smaller and fit. (just an FYI in case this is what you are doing.)
This is the best I can do with what you have told me in your email. Again, I recommend you go to a Dr. who knows the RAW diet and can follow your case specifically. A good Dr. can be your guide to RAW that is why my book and all diet books suggest one.
Please let me know how you do and if you find out why you are gaining and correct the situation, let me know what the cause was. This may help someone else too…..
Keep me posted.

I picked up your book Eating in the Raw yesterday and have already read it cover to cover. It’s great! I think this is exactly what I’ve been looking for. I am especially interested in any resources or recipes you could suggest which incorporate meat and fish. I am one who need these items in my diet and most of the other books I have come across on the subject of eating raw seem to be more vegetarian based. Any suggestions ? Also, when you say “sear” what does that mean exactly? Does the internal temprature of the meat need to be a certain degree for it to be safe to eat? Thanks so much for the great book!

Hi Marta,
My second book gives some more recipes with non-vegan foods.
Most raw foods are ‘vegan’ (no animal products at all-not even honey!)
So my suggestion is to go online and look for more recipes if my books don’t have enough.
I, personally, am a very simple eater. I like seared tuna that they give you in restaurants- Carpaccio, tartares and ceviches. I mainly stick with those.
Sometimes I like it with black and blue steak or brown and blue.
Again, in the section of my book on restaurants etc., you need to know the source of your food. If it is by any means “iffy” in your opinion, don’t eat it — not seared or cooked. (This also applies to any meats or fish you make at home).
Seared can be found in any restaurant (Japanese restaurants sear steak, too.)
I am not telling you to do anything that you cannot find in a good restaurant. It is just a very hot skillet and quickly cooking your meat/fish for a few seconds to desired ratio of cooked to raw. It is hard to describe online! (LOL)
Perhaps ask your favorite restaurateur to show you?
Oh, and just for your info, the definition of RAW is nothing over 115 degrees F.
Hope this all helps.
CA
P.S. read the email I wrote to Tamela just above yours since you are a new raw foodie- for some other guidelines and other types of info.

My back pain was gone and I felt clear headed and stable. Which is good for me because I am currently a student in my second year of college for social work. I was wondering did you experience the same effects with raw food and if so are the effects permanent if you continue with it? I found after my fast I felt great for a week or so after then the pain and crappy feeling came back.

Hi Loba,
So this is a complicated question. If you have access to a library or bookstore, go there and look at my second book, “the RAW 50?. There is a story in there about my sister and her back pain.
She is still mostly pain free and she is 80-90% RAW.
In any case, my problems were different from yours, but yes, the longer I was RAW, the bigger and better the benefits became. I had terrible health problems from years of not eating properly but your body has already told you it likes good food. when you were juiced, you felt better AND so did your back! – read your own letter.
I also did take my sister to a practitioner who worked with her body. She told me that for 2 years, she ate her normal diet and went to a therapist and got NO results. With RAW and the right person for her specific problem, she has been pretty much pain-free.
Now, every BODY is different, and you asked about me. So yes, the results were better and better and I believe I saved my own life by going raw.
So there, in a nut shell, is my opinion of raw, backaches, and my results.
Hope this helped.
CA
P.S. if you went back to your old diet after the juicing then you lost the benefits as you went. the body needs good food ALL the time. It is a full time job to feed yourself for health but I feel it is ABSOLUTELY worth it. By the way, it also becomes habit and easier and easier as you go. Best wishes.

I think HSN is the best place to get some stuff and then http://www.rawessentials.com for whatever deals you can no longer find on HSN. I think we still have a BOGO on HSN for face wash.
I also groove on toner. So like I said, when you trust me and the skin care line, you can go nuts and get lots of stuff. Wash and moisture are fundamental.
Wishing you the best with your health.

Hi Roxanne,
Got it!
I found the more RAW I got, the better results I got even with my health problems which mirror yours.
My hair got fuller and my lines and wrinkles lessened (but I was also using my skin care line along with eating raw because I was making in my kitchen!)
Raw silica helped me with skin, hair, and nails as did raw oils.
Ask your doctor who follows your raw diet what will help with your skin problems, but I found help in the above.

however, i do think that the person you take your info from should be someone NOT SELLING you the BHRT.
you need an independent person to ask–like an endocrinologist who you ask off the record.
anyone who is trying to sell you something will not give you an unbiased, free and clear answer as they have an interest in selling you the product.
i wish you all the best in your search for answers and truth.

Hi Lisa,
Oh man!
I got lucky–BEFORE Estee Lauder bought ‘Tony and Tina’ and shut them down (they were the only line I knew of that had the least amount of chemicals in it)
I bought a stock pile and refrigerated it.
If my skin care line does well enough, I would like to expand into makeup because, well, yeah, I hear ya, no one has it!
At this point, I don’t know, I can guess about bare essentials or I hear TART is supposed to be good, too!
But seriously, I have not looked REALLY deeply into it since I have been using Tony and Tina.
If I had to go to another line, they would be who I go to.
Does this help?

Hi Mary,
i am so sorry about your husband.
I had been diagnosed, too, and went to Dr Gonzales–he helped me a lot. Just an FYI
i am sorry to say that i have been in Russia for a rest this last month and a bit and i have no way to respond to your request.
I will do send a package when i return to my office on the 13th of Jan.
I know it will be hard to do, but i wish you a Merry Christmas and a happier New Year.
hang in there….

Hi Mieford,
As for the products on my website, you did not miss anything. See the above response to “Sharron” to explain why i have no products on the site.
As for raw cheese, I would never have had on my site because it is hard to ship, so i will answer this here:
your neighborhood cheese shop should have or should be able to get you raw milk cheeses if you request it.
Whole Foods carries raw milk cheeses all the time.
If there is no Whole Foods near you, you can try other health food stores and super markets (some have prepackaged raw milk cheeses.)
Please make sure it says RAW MILK on the label. If it doesn’t, then it is absolutely NOT raw.
You can also go online and find raw dairy products that can be shipped right to you.
However in this case, if it arrives bad or soured you own it–there is no money back.
So with this, you take your chances. I think if you choose this method then it is better to order from these online dairy sites in winter.
Hope this helps you.
All the best.

Hi Karen,
RAW helps to regulate so many things in the body. I do believe it helped me with my hair loss that started years ago!
My hair has returned but I also use a chem-free shampoo (DR YOUNG’S PH balance shampoo and conditioner! it is GREAT!) and chem-free skin care too! http://WWW.RAWESSENTIALS.COM
However, you need to see a doctor for your specific health needs and your nutrition.

first of all, a wash.
then i would use the anti-aging night cream (of course you should use day cream and night cream, but if i could only buy one, it would be the night as i think moisture/restoration is sooooo important.)
then the antiaging eye cream
but the best product i have is the Vita A serum. Kicks butt on wrinkles!

hi Carol,
I love your book ‘Eating in the raw’ Thank you for writing it. I am 42 years old. This year I lost 25 due to being treated for ovarian cancer and subsequently changing my diet drastically. The problem is that now i am too skinny (I was only 115 pounds to begin with) and can’t seem to gain any weight back without eating sugar or junk food. I look like a stick. Even if I gained just 10 or 15 pounds back I would be happy but have been unable to do so on this diet. Everyone comments on my low weight is. You look so healthy at a perfect weight even though you eat like this. How can I gain weight with healthy food? I know that may sound funny to you as almost everyone has the opposite problem. Any suggestions would be appreciated. You are so beautiful. I have always admired you. Olga

Olga,
I am sorry i did not see this question before.
I only found it today!
Here is my response: RAW food is supposed to make you your healthy weight. You cannot believe that some people write to me saying that they are fat and need to loose weight and yet they are gaining on RAW.
I tell them that they are doing one of two things: eating too much of one type of food (usually fatty foods like avocados) or they were really too thin and they may have to re-think their point of view of how they look!
I think if you eat RAW, you will not only regain health, but weight.
You should always work with a doctor. One who is following you so that you can ask him more specific questions about your health and situation. A doctor who knows raw foods might be best for this part of your life!
Let me know how you do.
Thanks,
CA

Hi Carol, Your books are terrific, well written and authoritative. As a yogi, I also like to think about millenniums of human history and the new technology that is “to cook food” instead of eat-all-raw. That said, raw food today requires blenders, processors and other machines to be convenient.
We are very happy with the raw diet, & believe live enzymes greatly improve assimilation, so I am writing about a minor detail of dehydration.
I listened to my friends, and bought the Excalibur Dehydrator. Being very enthusiastic, I also borrowed a round Ezidri (AKA Harvest Maid or American Harvester in the US?), and made up double batches of everything. As I have a digital thermometer, I was able to check the max & min temperatures of each machine.
The Excalibur temps averaged the set temp of 114*F 45*C but got up to 125*F 54*C. As the Excalibur website, & Dr. Cousens piece explains, they allow wide temperature fluctuations. The Ezidri (made in NZ based on a US design) kept an even temp, varying by only one degree.
I went an extra step and sprouted a collection of beans and seeds and dehydrated in each machine. Only the Ezidri samples were able to continue sprouting after dehydration, which shows that the enzymes were still alive. I returned the Excalibur I had bought, and will work with the round shape of the Ezidri, happy to keep my enzymes alive.
I am mystified by Dr. Cousens suggestion that temps above 115*F 45*C are only acceptable in the Excalibur; my sprouts died above that temp, which is not ideal. The Excalibur was apparently designed for beef jerky, not for raw foods. I am concerned that many Raw Foodies are buying a dehydrator that is killing the key enzymes, which will reduce the effectiveness of the whole Raw Movement.
From your books, I understand that you do not promote any particular brand, but, since my experiments proved the reverse of the Excalibur claims, I feel you will be interested… and you would be a convincing spokesperson for improvement in this technology.
No doubt that square shape is more convenient, but air does not move evenly in squares! The Excalibur will be a fine machine, once they use a more precise thermostat, and put in a baffle so that the temperatures are less variable at different parts of the tray. Until then, round crackers with a hole-in-the-middle!
Take out the shelves and look in the Excalibur and you will see the most elementary box, with no structure to spread out the air flow. They do have good marketing and somehow caught the attention of some well-known Raw Chefs. I am not impressed, and hope you can save the enzymes suffering under assault!
Sincerely,
Zack Domike, Nelson, NZ

WOW! Thank you so much for this info. I most certainly will pass along that this is the best machine!
Since I do not take anything to promote RAW foods or any of the related technology, (except the jack La Lanne juicer attached to my books!) I only recommend what I truly believe to be the best; since that is where my interests lie; not anything monetary!
So indeed I will forward your info to anyone asking me this question in the future!!
Thank you again!!

I don’t know where to start, and if you can help me. I’m a 28 year old female, mother of a 6 year old and an 8 month old baby girl. I started having problems with my scalp when I got pregnant with my second baby. My scalp is slightly red, inflammed, oily and scaly. God knows I have tried everything I can get my hands on. I used a Ketaconazole shampoo that a dermatologist gave me, but it caused a negative reaction (allergy) which made my hair fall out even more and excruciating pain on my scalp. My hair falls out in clumps, all the time, everywhere. I just read your e-book, and it was funny because you explain to massage the scalp really well (whatever hair falls out would have fallen out anyways), but I just seem to be cautios everytime, since I have long hair and it falls out a lot. I’m losing hope. Why is it that in the past, my scalp was never like this, never oily, never scaly or inflammed, despite of dying my hair, using sodium laureth sulfate shampoos–Never was like this. My diet in the past consisted of mexican food—meats, tortillas or white bread (just a few not a lot though) and vegetables (lots of exercise) and a few glasses of milk with protein powder, yet seborrehic dermatitis was never a problem for me. I started changing my diet due to the fact that a tooth was bothering me (sensitivity) and I read online that vitamins A and D were necessary for the formation of tooth enamel along with calcium. I then started to eat more meats like liver, cod liver oil, whole raw milk, butter (on baked potatoes), whole grain sprouted flourless breads and tortillas, and green vegetable juices. I then developed seborrehic dermatitis and things just went wild after the birth of the baby—I think it the antibiotics i was injected during labor played a role in the severity. Anyways, I have been trying to see what I’m allergic to if that’s the problem. Can it be dairy, but I i’ve always had dairy and my skin had never been like this. I don’t know. I just don’t want to cut calories and make the hairfall even worse. I do take probiotics and drink kerfir occasionally. I feel hopeless. I wish my hair would stop falling out and regain what i’ve lost. What advice can you give me carol.
IAnyway, my diet looks like this at the moment
Example:
breakfast: whole grain cereal (sprouted flourless Ezequiel brand) with almond milk or rice milk.
snack: piece of fruit with a little bit of almonds
lunch: piece of chicken, vegetable (brocoli etc) and salad with a slice of sprouted whole grain bread or a tortilla (corn or rice tortilla)
snack: some nuts
dinner: some fish with brown rice vegetable and salad
late snack—smoothie with blueberries, kefir or yogurt, and some whey protein
“tri-boron plus minerals” and b complex along with powdered greens
No junk food—NADA—No soda–no alcohol–no coffee—NADA—
you see, this is frustrating
please help me. I need to feel healthy again because this thing is consuming my time and my self-esteem. I need this time and energy to raise my kids and feel confident once again. Please advice.

carol, i apologize for the posted statement ” I just read your e-book, and it was funny because you explain to massage the scalp really well (whatever hair falls out would have fallen out anyways).” I know you did not write this in an e-book. It was a confusion with this other lady who had written that, and i had just read that book prior to getting to your website just a few hours ago. I guess I just had her comment in my head. Anyhow, bottomline situation is the same: scalp problems, hair loss,. I think i eat good (at least in my opinion), but maybe you have some advice for me. I will buy your books and maybe that will give me more info. In the meantime, please advice. Is there a cure for this, what can i do or why do you think this is happening? Doctors have not helped much. thank you and i apologize again for the mistake.

eveisofia,
I tell everyone to go to a doctor before doing any life style changing.
but i will tell you my experience with hair loss.
I found it to be hormone related. as i ate raw, my hormones balanced out and my hair came back. it was that simple, but i worked that long and hard to have that result.
bottom line: it is not easy to do, but i believe with Raw foods and the right diet plan and the right doctor following you and answering your questions–it can be done.
good luck!

Please read my first answer above. I then I got this question. I have an idea to add.
I use Dr. YOUNG’S PH balance shampoo. It is chem-free.
Also, use my chem-free skin care RAW ESSENTIALS at RAWESSENTIALS.com
Part of the problem could be that hormones and other things changed after the baby. I think RAW will help you to re-balance your insides and the shampoo (and you need the conditioner with long hair) and good skin care will help outside.
You sound like you have a couple of problems so lets hit them both and see….
Please keep me posted!

I just saw you had no response, so here I am to answer again!
Sorry for the technical error!
In my books, which you can most likely find in the library, I have all sorts of things to eat that are easy to make that do not have sugars: soups made in the blender and juices with veggies.
In my second book, The Raw 50, I give you meal plans–129 recipes!

I was wondering if you thought models today are just geeting bigger in general. I mean, today, models are over 6 feet and wear a size 12 shoe. I think the only model that fits this mold from the 80’s was Elle Macpherson. Now, they all fit this mold. I think I saw you and Cheryl Tiegs in a picture and it looked like Cheryl might have been over 6 feet as well

Hi Nat1234!
Yes! i do!
Not only are the models getting bigger, but humans in general!
Ever go to the museum and see the costumes they wore in the 1800’s? They are tiny!!
Feet so small! LOL!
So i think this is proof positive that we are ALL getting bigger–and hopefully better.
As for Cheryl, I think she is about my size–5′10″ or 5′11″

I just want to say that you are an inspiration, after reading your book titled Eating in the Raw I embarked on my new lifestyle journey. I just want to say that I am 25 and I believe that just like you there is no reason why human beings should not look good at any age. Carol it has been about 3 months now and I am starting to see changes. I was just wondering when did you start seeing changes? Is it a slow gradual process that later speeds up? I am trying to be realistic about this and I know it doesn’t just happen over night. Especially after years of poisoning the body without proper nourishment. What is your take and view on the time frame it truly takes to see vivid astonishing changes?
Reply
Carol Alt Reply:
December 22nd, 2009 at 7:48 am
Hi Uri_tsatsko!
I felt changes right away because I was so ill.
My sinuses cleared up and I never had to use any aids to breathe again!
Stomach acid, gone.
Flu, never again!
Colds, thing of the past!
Weight gain, nope!
Starving to keep thin, not me ever again!
Sleeping better, yup!
Getting up in the morning feelin’ good, check!
Wrinkles, lessening!!!
But YOU cannot go by ME!
First of all, I was older and had started to experience aging and deterioration! YOU are 25! You hopefully didn’t have such BIG issues.
What you can expect then is that you may have avoided all those health issues that I had. Maybe in the future you will not be on pills for all your little aches and pains!!
What I mean is perhaps you had minor, little problems that you had started getting symptoms of that you now do not notice anymore or you do not REALIZE you do not notice them as they GRADUALLY went away with RAW!!
However, if you continued to eat cooked, perhaps you would have started to experience a bunch of problems like I did and perhaps you would have ended up seeking medical help for them or taking pills for them (and then pills for your side-effects of those pills.)
You may never fully understand the benefits you are getting from RAW because it is like that movie “Sliding Doors”: When you come to a life changing decision and ou pick one road, you will never know what would have happened if you actually had picked the other road.
In your case, if you had NOT changed your food, the question is:
What would your life and your health have been like as you aged? Would you have been ill? Suffered from all sorts of maladies? Sinus infections and stomach acid, migraine headaches? Flu? Cancer?
But by going RAW, you may never experience any of these things.
We will see what the future holds!
Because, if you go RAW and you don’t experience these things, it would be hard to think about the fact that you COULD have experienced these things if you ate cooked.
Do you see what i am getting at? You may already BE receiving benefits. You may already have changed your destiny! Not always do we KNOW what benefits we are getting!
For me, it was soooooo obvious that I had made the best decision because my health was SO bad it had no where to go but up! When I got healthier, I looked better.
Hope I explained this well enough?
CA
P.S. If it is your weight you are worried about, RAW helps your body seek its proper weight. As long as you are not eating too much of one thing and not enough of another. I find that people get their “favorites” and they eat these things over and over. The body then has too much of one thing and cannot use it up and it stores it. Try not to do this. Also, speak with you Doctor if you are having any problems or questions that you need answered about your personal situation! Maybe there is something I have missed with my answer!

Hi Eather,
I eat meat very rarely as I am a very acid system and
meat is rather acid–even raw meat is more acid than
raw fish!
I eat more fish than meat and that I eat about 5 times
a week or so.
I eat dairy, I don’t know, maybe four times a week.
usually I have a bit with my salad.
I do try to keep a well rounded menu though and I try
not to eat too much of one thing and sometimes i go a month without any cheese at all.
So I also try to listen to my body! If I want something I
will have a bit of it. Hopefully, it will be raw!
Sometimes I crave something cooked and I try not to
give in to those cravings.
i usually get those cravings when I have not eaten a well rounded
menu or if I have missed a meal!
Hope this helps!

My sister-in-law and I are great fans and have read your “raw” books. She has breast cancer and now the two of us have started to eat raw. She is better but I am trying. I would like to know what fish you eat and how you prepare it. I find that I do not want to go without fish but need to know the best way to prepare it. Also what dairy do you eat and by dairy do you mean raw as in raw cheese. Thanks a lot.

Hi Cher,
You are an important part of your sister’s health regime.
It is so important to communicate with your sister, to
be there and share this with her. You cannot believe
how much that helps someone who is going through what
she is going through.
Also, to be able to share the eating regime and to do it
with someone is sooooooo important. this I know!
So OK, that said, you asked several questions:
First, I eat fish. I need it. (please see my answer above to
MOE)
I have several recipes in my book, but the best is the
ceviche.
I eat also sashimi (not sushi) and lightly sear a sashimi
grade fish at home I buy this at the store and I tell
them I am eating it RAW so I get the freshest fish.
Here’s how I prepare at home:
I make the pan hot, drop in the fish and let it brown on one
side and then on the other. I then slice it thin, drizzle some
cold pressed olive oil mixed with UDO’s choice oil, and
some Power Organics salt. I do this with salmon and tuna
the other types of fish. I eat at Japanese restaurants so that I
get a WIDE VARIETY of fish!
I also eat MARINATED fish, NOT SMOKED!
Your sister should JUICE a lot. I cannot stress that
enough.
To me, cancer is an ACID disease and she needs
alkaline. The best way I know to do that is with JUICES; fresh, veggie juices, especially carrot. (again see MOE above)
In terms of dairy, I eat RAW MILK cheeses. They are UNPASTEURIZED cheeses. If you have an international cheese shop in your town, they should have them or else
Whole Foods has them (just ask the person behind the
counter to try the “raw milk” cheeses. Read the label, only
raw milk cheeses say RAW MILK on the label. so there is
no mistaking them. and, there are many choices).I
do RAW UNPASTEURIZED goat’s milk too.
I found a guy who sells it about two hours from my
house and I go and pick it up. I drink what I can while it is
fresh and then I freeze the rest. When I defrost it, I
use it in my juices. Some people buy this milk online.
just type in RAW DAIRY.
By the way, cheese is not raw just because it is COLD.
This is a common error many people make!
Like hummus that is on the shelf of the deli, it is cooked
to give it shelf life. This is not good for HUMAN LIFE!
Get my book from the library (The Raw 50) to get some
ideas for recipes. There is a hummus, salsa, ceviche and
129 other kinds of recipes.
That should help you out.
My first book, “Eating in the RAW” is about the lifestyle
and teaching how to spot RAW foods. It also has 30
recipes to start you off.
Again, these should be in your library-if they are not,
ask them to get them.
Hope all this helps!
Keep up the good work and all my good wishes to your sister.

Hi Kristin,
Just to say off the bat, that I am not a doctor, these are
my opinions only.
I do not know what stage her cancer was, but in my
second book called, The RAW 50, I wrote about a
gentleman who had a rare form of cancer and was
considered terminal. He wrote his story for my book
and in that story he talked about how juicing saved
his life.
I have heard so many stories like this that I have to think
that nutrition is ABSOLUTELY important and alkalizing
the body, even more so.
If I had to make this decision, I would most certainly add
the Hippocraties to my list of things to do to help
myself.
Hope this helps you….

Dear Carol,
I started my raw food adventure about 9 months ago after my husband cured his digestive problems with green smoothies. I was instantly hooked. I just knew the truth in the simplicity of eating this way. For some reason however, when I eat a raw, vegan diet, I don’t get the mental clarity and energy boost that so many raw foodest talk about. Instead I feel spacey and drained. As much as being a vegan seems right on so many levels, I’m wondering if like you, I need some animal protein in my diet. I really want eating raw food to work for me.
I wonder if you could tell me exactly what kinds of animal proteins you include in your diet and how much you consume (on average) per day or per week?
Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my question,

Hey Moe-
this is a good and important question. I, like you it
seems, need fish!
one friend i have needs meat.
i write in my book, Eating in the RAW, that i do not
believe being Vegan is good for a body. I think you
need to eat what the body needs, not what the mind
wants.
so i got tested (a hair test) and found out that i was a
Moderate Vegetarian. Meaning that i NEED fish to feel
good.
and yes, my friend got tested from his nutritionist and
found he was a moderate carnivore.
I eat fish, therefore, about 5-7 times a week. depending
on how i am feeling.
so perhaps you can start to add some fish in your diet.
and see how it goes.
but overall, ask your nutritionist to test you!
Congratulations on being AWARE of your body and
realizing that this is not a RAW problem, it is a VEGAN vs. Fish/meat problem!
Good luck and great health!

I’m writing to you re:night cream, your night cream. I bought some items from The Shopping Channel, in Canada, at your last visit. I was veryn excited and few days later I took them to my girl-friend’s place to show it to her. In my rush, I dropped the night cream outside my car and it sayed there the whole night. (I thought I must’ve dropped in the car). I’ve founded the next day. I’ve tried on later in the day, I’ve founded to be very watery.
My question to you is: has it lost all qualities being left in -20C or that’s the way to be, watery?
And another thing I’d like top mention to you is that the eye cream, the pump, splashes the cream; it’s a waste.

well, yes, -20C is not the optimum temp for our creams! LOL
i am sure it froze and then thawed…thus making it watery.
our night cream is actually my FAV cause it is thick and
creamy.
i spoke with my partner and we will send you a replacement.
no problem.
as for the eye cream pump, try to not put it so close to your finger. when i use this pump, it does not splatter. and i
also use it on-air and it doesn’t splatter. i am not sure
when the problem is, but try to go slow and easy. you
should need very little eye cream to do the job.
hope this helps?

Hi Carol,
I ordered some of your products from The Shopping Channel – Canada.
I just noticed that the creams contain potassium hydroxide which is actually lye and suppose to be a very caustic material.
I did a search on the internet, and I found out that some manufacturers use this chemical in cosmetics to balance their PH. Isn’t there a more safe, natural way to balance the PH?
Should I be anyway worried about the long term effect it could have on the skin?
Thank you very much,

Dear Iberegic.
i am always have very happy for the chance to show how
our skin care is different!
because we take every effort to ensure the ingredients we use exist in nature or are derived from nature. Unfortunately, there are several ways to get an ingredient, but only one way to list it according to the government’s INCI requirements.
First let me clarify that Lye is most closely associated with Sodium Hydroxide. There are many ways to get Potassium Hydroxide and some of them could be considered Lye, which is a broad definition for a base alkaline.
Our Potassium hydroxide is an alkalizer or material that is used to raise the pH of the product and neutralize the natural plant derived fatty materials that are in the product to make an emulsifier that holds everything together. It actually is naturally derived. Potassium hydroxide comes from potash or potash from the Dutch. It literally means wood ash. The short answer is there is no real substitute for potassium hydroxide as such. There are synthetic products with larger molecules and are associated with Lye, but we are using a natural potash. Additionally, this product is on the USDA and the FDA list of approved natural ingredients.
Thank you again for your question and we understand the confusion with ingredients. We wish there was enough room for us to explain where each of our ingredients come from and how they are derived, but there isn’t enough room. Additionally, our Potassium Hydroxide derived from potash, is a base ingredient in all of the natural soap companies list of ingredients and the natural “make your own” soap companies ingredients.
and finally, in response to your last question, i am always worried about the long term effects of harsh chemicals on
my skin–so yes, you should always think about what you
are putting on your skin and its effects no only on your skin
but on your health! That is why i have been making all my
own skincare for the last 10 years! that skin care has
morphed into Raw Essentials–more or less!

Cristina,
My boyfriend is a pro hockey player and he eats RAW!
He found that he had more energy. He did not have
highs and lows, but he was able to have constant
energy and a consistent performance- even towards
the end of the season when everyone else was tired,
RAW gave him an edge.
He also does not get sick like everyone in the locker room does. You know, when one person in the locker room gets a cold and then everyone gets a cold? Well, he did
not get the colds and flu everyone else on the team got.
So he got some very good results with RAW as an athlete.
But really, I do not know if you or your parents know a
homeopathic doctor to help you if you have any specific questions or if you need to ‘tweak’ your program during times of more stress like when you have a competition.
You also did not say if you wanted to go vegan, vegatarian or
or eat meat. It is best if you save making this decision
until you find out what is optimum for your body type.
A homeopath can help you with these types of decisions.
Hope this all helps.
Good luck with your endeavors!
All the best,
CA

Hello Carol,
Thank you so much for sharing the things you have learned with all of us!
I am just starting to read one of your books and am very interested in the Raw diet. I have weaned myself off of coffee, am working on the sugar……….but my question is about beer. I love to have a single bottle of beer (Red Hook ESB) with my dinner at night. It isn’t the alcohol (obviously, since it is one beer) and would be fine with a non-alcoholic one if i could find one with a good taste. However, is ANY kid of beer a no-no? And if so, any suggestions on a fizzy drink that has a nutty or “beer”-y taste that I could substitute the beer with?
Thank you again!

Hi Lisa,
Yeah, beer is a no-no. but you know, make it your cheat
if you have to.
try to cut down and have it once a week and then see if
as you get more RAW you decide to have it less and less.
that is what i found in my own eating….
i think however, your enjoyment of the beer is for the
sugar. Alcohol is sugar and you mentioned that you are
working on cutting down on sugar. remember sugar
comes from many sources: pasta, cookies, soup fillers,
gravies, wheat products of any sort (unless sprouted
wheat), not just from candy and granulated sugar
if you are reading my first book, i kinda tell you how a
doctor helped me “wean” myself off of sugar(i used to
start my day with a shot of scotch in coffee. and like
you, i said it is not for the alcohol as i only had ONE.
but it WAS for the alcohol–it had a hard shot of sugar!
so i had the alcohol for the sugar hit!)
anyway, the book might give you and idea how to wean
yourself. but still, it is always best to work with your
own doctor to achieve your goals safely.
I know this was not much help to you. when i loved
nacho chips, i wanted someone to tell me it was just
fine to eat them.
i had to make my own decision about which was more
important to me; my health or my nachos!
i think this is the question you are facing now.
i wish you wisdom to make the right choices for you!
thank you for writing.
ca
ps the only drink i found that is RAW and tastes like
beer is made in Switzerland. it is called Tea mit frukten
made by the company Ojas or here they simply called it
OJAS.
but they stopped importing it to the US and i do not
know why- i loved it and i miss it!

Hi Carol,
I recently read your Going Raw Book….One thing confused me. I was under the impression that sprouted bread, even Ezenkiel and such, are all baked, and hence they are not raw. Can you explain further if/how you consider these breads to be raw? Thank you.
Reply
Carol Alt Reply:
February 24th, 2010 at 4:09 pm
You are absolutely right. Ezekiel bread is not raw–it was
at one time, but no longer.
Manna bread is raw in the center but the shell is cooked
(hence fitting the 75-90% raw idea)
I did not remove Ezekiel bread from the book because I
found that many people were already dismayed at giving
up so many of their comfort foods that I felt at least Ezekiel
bread is all sprouted ingredients so you do not get the
Histamine effect that you get with regular or whole wheat
bread and I thought it would give parents something to feed
the kids in their lunch box that was not regular bread.
I realized when I wrote the book that RAW would be a
radical change for so many people, that I thought I
would give them courage to change not take away
anything that was familiar to them.
It was a hard decision and yet I had hoped that once
people went RAW, they would find their own foods that
they love (the internet is full of great stuff to buy or
make). They would ultimately find a raw sprouted bread
that they would try and like.
I guess what I am saying is that I anticipated my
audience and their reaction and tried to write the book
to encourage the most people I could to get them talking
and trying without scaring them away.
Believe me, every day when I talk to people about RAW,
they look at me like I am nuts, but the more we radiate
our foods, and the more we preserve them and cook
them, the more we need to seek out RAW!
Thank you for the chance to explain this decision!
CA
P.S. Not all sprouted breads are cooked. Go on the internet and you will find lots of RAW sprouted breads!
One of my new favorites is Outrageous onion bread from
Aimee’s living magic. It is amazing!

The Morrocco Method has some henna for all hair types. i did this for a while.
coloring is hard–i have very few grey cause i eat raw and have really fed my body. grey hair is from the lack of certain minerals.
my doctor told me that some people use up minerals faster than others.
I know dr. Marshall from Primary resource has told me he was totally grey and was able to make his hair dark again thru nutrition.
this is why i tell every one who goes RAW to work with a doctor!
they can help you change around things in your body that you may not even know need to be worked on!
anyway, the henna is messy.
there are also some nice new hair colors that i see are being advertised on TV that at least do not have ammonia in them. and well, that is a start, too!
good luck!

First of all, I wish i knew about RAW food when i was your
age! I suffered so much to lose weight and to keep it off.
I can’t imagine the REAL career I would have had if in fact
I had the energy to be social as well as work!
the next thing is not to be self conscious of what you look
like–the camera picks that up as being haughty. and no
one likes to look at pictures of haughty women.
sexy, mean, pouty, funny and arrogant- yes. if this is a
character you are “portraying” still need an inviting person
underneath. i find girls who are self conscious never get
that inviting look! the secret to that look is to love who
you are and then to be a character on top of that.
ultimately, who you are will always shine thru.
do you understand? did i explain it ok?
The “it” factor is hard to describe. but you need to invite
the camera (and therefore the audinece) in to your world.
if you do not love your world, people will see that immediately!
hope this helps.

First of all, I have to say that I have never heard this about germinated grains! I eat Aimee’s Magic Living Sprouted Crackers and Onion Bread and I have no problems! I also eat oatmeal cookies and granola (all raw and sprouted) and have been doing so for years!
I do not know of any problems with the mixture you have been eating. No one has complained to me yet about this.
However, if you fear that this might happen (and I do recommend that you work with a doctor when changing you diet)
You may try an occasional enema just in case you get bloated.
I am not sure how much grain you are eating and I am not following your diet, so these things I am telling you are just suggestions to get you thru until you find a doctor!
As for a RAW breakfast combination, Good Stuff From Mom and Me makes excellent Almond and original granola breakfast or snack cereal!
Hope this all helps!

Hi Carol, A sweet friend just recommended your books to me last week. I bought “Eating in the Raw” and “the Raw 50″ two days ago. Yesterday I bought a Jack Lulanne juicer and a dehydrator and can’t wait to put them to use. Our city has very limited options for organic foods, but we are anxiously awaiting the opening of a Fresh Market this summer. We do have some local farmers who grow organic products so I will take advantage of what they have in season when I find them. MY QUESTION: Supposedly, many of the plastic containers now are free of the cancer causing agents….Can we trust that? Should we discontinue use of plastic storage bags, disposable plastic bowls, “Food Saver” bags? I recently saw glass food storage containers but they had plastic lids.
Thank you for caring about us! Having checked out your website, your blog, and read most of your two books, I really sense that you do a lot of it because you truly care. I have an overwhelming desire to learn more and put it in to practice in a hurry so my family and I will be more healthy and so people around me can see the changes and I can help them.

Hi Clara,
Congratulations! Welcome to the world of RAW!
Welcome, also, to becoming more AWARE!
Being more aware is the hard part!-and that is where your questions comes from. Suddenly you are seeing
marketing hype and you are concerned to get the right
answers and live your life cleanly and more healthy!
This is a big step. I hope i can help you!!
So, this is an interesting question! “Do you trust anybody?”
I personally do not trust anyone-except myself. In my life I have seen and heard of the most unorthodox things happening:
Farmers who say they are organic but who are not because it is too expensive to be organic! But, they want to sell their produce at a higher price and the organic label allows them to do that. so they just “say” they are organic without being so…
Oncologists who tell their patients to do Chemo- but when their family gets cancer they ABSOLUTELY do not recommend chemo!
I mean we live in world that wants to make money at any cost.
On the one hand the idea is so sad that companies and people put making money above the welfare of their fellow man. But on the other hand I KNOW that people do that so I live my life according to that knowledge…
That said, I prefer the glass containers even if they have plastic lids because the food is sitting in the glass and rarely if at all touches the plastic lid.
I do not drink from plastic water bottles. and I do not put my food in plastic.
Even though, I do put my skin care in plastic and they are PETA standard–that is done because it is dangerous to have glass bottles in the bathroom where you are putting slippery creams on.
You know, you can only do so much to protect yourself. You have to live your life, too!
So I tell anyone who asks: “do the best you can!”
RAW gives you an edge that most other conventional eaters do not have. So already if you eat RAW you are ahead of the game!!
AND truthfully, I eat RAW BECAUSE I know we live in a dirty, polluted, corrupt world–and I refuse to be DUPED into making myself sick because I fall for the marketing hype of greedy companies and their Lobbyists—
So, with ALL that said (LOL!)
I hope i have answered your question. and that answer is–trust yourself and your research and no one else. Yet learn to LIVE your LIFE without feeling guilty if you have done the best research and followup on something and you have no choice but to believe what you have found.
PHEW! i did not expect that answer to be so long….

Carol,
I too was born in 1960 and as my 50th birthday is fast approaching in May, I have decided to up it a notch in my health care. I have been eating what I thought to be healthy until I started looking into eating raw and realized that I was missing a lot of the “born nutrition” in my foods. I just purchased your book “Eating in the Raw” on Saturday, have read the whole thing and have made my grocery list. I am priveleged to live near a really good Whole Foods Market , which I frequent. My focus has changed however after reading your book. I am slowly switching over to eating raw, I even germinated my first lentals just today and want to get a sprouting container. I mainly am writing to you to say thank you for helping me to enter a new chapter in my life on an upbeat note. Aging doesn’t really bother me , maybe because I feel good and have taken care of myself, as best as I knew how. I believe raw eating will help me with some of the little things I’ve noticed just lately.
I am planning a trip to New York City for my 50th with my sisters. I would love to dine at one of the raw restaurants that you mentioned in your book. Maybe I can get one of them motivated as well
Thank you again Carol, your book answered questions I have had about raw. It was what I needed as a beginner. You gave me what I needed to start this life style. I feel like I am on an exciting new adventure.

Hi Rebecca,
I know raw was the answer for me. It is not the answer for everybody, so if your sisters do not respond, do not be upset, just take them slowly. The changes in your body may be the convincing factor!
That said, Pure Food and Wine is a wonderful and beautiful restaurant;
a bit pricey, but all raw food restaurants are.
Just eat slowly. Raw food is quite nutritious and you can suddenly be full.
Enjoy the experience as the new and wonderful experience it is.
I hope you have a great time! Happy 50TH to come!

I’ve recently started to eat healthier and have a great interest in incorporating some raw foods into my diet. Thanks to your book Carol Alt Eating in the Raw, Alton Brown, and Gillian McKeith’s show, I began to realize how unhealthy and toxic my diet was. Over the past month, I’ve begun a diet change. I already feel much healthier and have lost weight without even attempting to diet. I’d like to incorporate a various diet of eating mostly raw food with some cooked and an occasional steak—don’t think I could give up on my steak just yet.
Last year, I saw a seminar that you were giving at the Huntington Hilton and was considering attending. I was unable to attend last year and was wondering if you will be doing any future seminars? I could not find any information listed on your website. I really regret that I never made it to your seminar last year since I probably would have started eating healthier for a year now and been in bikini shape by now.

But you write such lovely emails, that they MUST be responded to with a deeply felt THANK YOU!
The emails are wonderful! and I would never NOT respond!
Thank you again for not being mad or upset at the glitch–and I know you were not mad ’cause your next email at Mother’s day was just as sweet as this one!

Hi Carol, I recently started eating raw and doing a lot of reading about it. I’ve been questioning a lot of food products that I thought were raw, but after research found out that they are not. Like applesauce for example (pasteurization). Could you please tell me if teabags, pickles, and dried unsulphered fruit (packaged from the store) are raw foods? Thank you. PS I sent my mom your webpage and hopes she hops on the bandwagon!

Hi,
So this is a tough question because there are RAW
versions of everything! That is the BEAUTY of RAW!!
You need to find your suppliers!
That is all
I eat Real Pickles and Grillo Pickles because they are RAW.
but not all pickles are raw!
You MUST read the labels.
Best thing to do is to either go to the sites i suggest on
my site or else type in ‘raw foods’ on your computer
and get some stuff shipped to you. Many of these
shipped foods i get in large amounts if i think they can
store– so i save on shipping costs….
Food is deceiving because people think because a food
is cold it is raw–NOT the case as you have seen!
I buy only dried fruits from Dr. Robert Marshall in Texas
or else i do it myself in the dehydrator (MUCH cheaper)
But being raw or not is not the only problem we face with our food! The other problem is that manufacturers usually
put chemicals on the food so it doesn’t rot.
Yes, i know, it is a tough time to be a human who needs
to eat. But do not worry! Do the best you can and buy
from people who sell RAW foods. When you find what
you like, and what is RAW, you will always go back to
the same stuff.
Once you know where to get what you like, the process
becomes much like your shopping of old.
Hope i cleared some stuff up?
CA
PS good luck to your MOM!! My mom does it, too!
Also- Just an FYI, my book has lots of great recipes–check it out of your local library and try some!

There is so much online these days it is hard to keep up. I have read this new online info. and it seems like it comes from Johns Hopkins. But you can see it above in an email sent to me that I responded to today.
Please also forward this email info to your friends and make sure that they speak to their doctors about their personal conditions if there are any concerns.

Of course, HSN did not forward fan mail! Please write. I respond to every letter I get!

Hi Carol,
How lucky are we to have you here???
Quick questions:
What’s your take on food combining? (Sorry if you mentioned it elsewhere already.)
As someone with a recurring adult cystic acne condition, I wonder if you’ve personally seen any changes regarding how it’s affected by raw food, and whether you feel your awesome looking skin care line would be appropriate even for skin like mine.
Lastly, there’s soooo much conflicting information about raw food these days (Natalia Rose says some cooked food is fine if combined correctly, most raw foodists shun eating fish/meat, everyone’s got an opinion!). Do you think the best thing you can do is trust your body and intuition?
Thanks so much,
Jen

first of all, i think we need to live!!
if you are eating raw food but you decide to eat some cooked
food, go for it! (just do it rarely and pop some enzymes!)
But, clearly, I think that Dr Gonzales has the best take
on it: “Eat how your ancestors ate.”
He says that only Eskimos can eat all meat, fish and fats
with no grains. and that Tropical Rainforest Indians can
survive on all grains with no meat.
Otherwise everyone else inbetween is a somewhat
moderate vegetarian. I see many vegans who look just awful-pale and gray!
I think we need to give our bodies what our bodies need.
Period. Not what we think it needs or what we decide morally
is right. Food is the most important DRUG you will ever encounter.
As for food combining i keep it simple because the body
digests in specific order and it makes a specific enzyme
to digest each and every specific food.
So i try to keep it simple: not to eat grains with proteins.
but i eat fats with everything. Essential fats that is…..
I eat cold pressed oil on salads as well as on meat, fish
and especially on grains.
So basically i eat a salad and fish/meat
or a salad with grains-
and cold pressed oil on everything.
food combining does help ease the stress on the body.
As for your skin. i think that part of the problem with skin these days is that we put too many chemicals in the body and
on the skin-even in our water we have chemicals.
if you are eating right, and putting the right, clean,
chem-free stuff on your skin, then i think you will get
results!
But, hey, i am not a doctor. Yet, i have seen some amazing
results with clean, healthy skin care and clean healthy food.
hope this helps?

Since I have only been married once, i am not sure, but i
will venture what is FAIR…..
I do not think it fair to ask the parents of the bride to
keep paying every time their daughter gets married. I think your
future son-in-law already knew his future wife was married once and this should have been common sense to him.
However, that does not rule out that if you are well off enough
to help out on this wedding, you should. Just because you love your daughter and want to help her out. Any money her
future husband spends on their wedding is that much less
they will have for their nest egg…..
I think you guys need to sit and talk this over.
But hey, who am i?
this is just my opinion.

What I was wondering is do you have a RAW cosmetic line that you can recommend? (foundations, lipsticks, shadows..etc_) And maybe even a shampoo / conditioner company as well? I am a hairstylist and if I can find a line of hair care that I love that is RAW I would love to reccommend it to my clients as well!
Any help you can give me is so appreciated! Thank you for your wonderful books and products! You are a wonderful inspiration!

Hi Jeana,
The web host is having problems posting my answers–i answered this weeks ago and just found that the reply did not go thru.
Recently i started to think that perhaps any mineral line would be better than the Chemical laden lines that are out there.
I was as fortunate to buy up all of “Tony and Tina” because that was the best line then.
Truth is, i try to have the best skin ever by using my skin care (rawessentials.com) and then i have to use less makeup.
in fact, i just shot for V magazine and they did not use foundation on me! a tribute to how amazing my skin care line is that at 49 they did not use foundation.
So, my advice? get the glow in your skin and then use a Bare Minerals Makeup or something akin to that.
At least this can hold you over until i make a makeup line! (LOL!)
Sorry i cannot be of more help. No one i know makes a raw make up line. we just have to do the best we can “until”
best wishes,

Hi Carol!
I realy enjoyed your book. I have read a few other “Raw” books in the past but they were too complicated and overwhelming to me. Your book is down to earth and easy to understand. Your explainations of the difference between “Raw” and “Healthy/Natural/Organic” foods is much easier to understand. Your book has inspired me to go all the way “Raw”! Thank you!!!
I have a few questions if you dont mind…
1) Coconut oil – Is organic cold pressed, Raw?
Do you warm it up a bit to melt it for the Kefir drink?
I love it on my skin! I thought it would break me out on my face but it hasent!
2) Kefir – This tastes great. I have never had it till I read your book. The only Kefir I can find is made with pasterized milk. Can I use part of this Kefir for a starter to make my own with Rice milk?
Thank you again! Tami

Ok, this is a long answer.
First of all, I use coconut oil on my skin too! I actually put it into my skincare line (rawessentials.com) because it is so beneficial and by putting it on your skin, you absorb some into the body.
‘Cold pressed’ is raw as is ‘cold processed’
Of course it will not break you out, only “cooked’ or heat emulsified oils will sit on the skin and block the pores!
As for adding it to your drinks, you need to first warm it up:
I usually put it in the sun so it does not get too hot. I take it out of the sun when the right amount I need melts or I put hot water in a big bowl and then but the coconut oil in a smaller bowl and set it into the hot water in the big bowl. you want to make sure you do not heat the oil too much and change the molecular structure of it.
Ok, the kefir part is tougher. Here, I do not have all the answers!
I do my kefir with pasteurized milk and I asked Dr. Marshal (who I bought my bud from) if this is OK and he said that the bacteria
re-instates the milk. Not so sure I believe him, but I still eat kefir in small doses for the bacteria everyday. If I get raw milk I do not cook it before adding the “bud.”
You can get raw milk online too but you risk it arriving spoiled esp. in the summer. But to some people, it is worth it.
I know the important part of the kefir is the bacteria (good bacteria from the “bud”) and the fats. So you want to have whole milk. all this according to Dr. Marshall.
In essence, I have not tried to make kefir from any other type of milk since Dr. Marshall said you need the fats to make good kefir.
Sooooo, how about trying it? you can scoop two buds out of your existing kefir and make one the regular way and one with rice milk…
I have gotten my “buds” (I write about buds in my book. Good Indian Restaurants usually make their own kefir in clay pots and you can ask for a bud or offer to buy some kefir to use as a bud.)
There are also some places that sell raw kefir–in Ontario; I get it in Ottawa.
My friend gets it at whole foods in LA. My sister got it online even (I think)
Anyway, the best part about raw foods is the ability to experiment with tastes. if you make it and it fails, toss it.
Mut if you make it and it is great- viola! You found something new!
Oh and yeah, my other friend owns a restaurant and he makes it from coconut—
I hope this helps.
You can also research online about kefir to be more educated!

Of course they are for men! i am sorry that you did not hear that the scent is “metro-sexual”
it is a cool lemon, orange and lime scent.
wanted to make it nice for the guys, too!
my boyfriend uses the whole kit-and-kaboodle.
he uses the wash to shave, he says it is less irritating, he gets no in-growns and his skin is not as sensitive.
of course, i think that is because there are no chemicals to irritate the skin!
he does use a moisturizer after. he uses the normal to everyday skin care line- the day cream; not the anti-aging. he is 37….
he also likes the body wash and the body moisture.
not sure you need much else.
but if you want to have fun, the eye cream is so nice! 82% aloe very soothing. put it in the refrig in the summer for extra benefit and soothing in the heat.
thanks again for your email, and thank you for being so sweet!
let me know how you like them….

Hey Gwen,
raw essential oils are what you are talking about.
fish, of course, has fish oils.
but i add to that Udo’s Choice Oil which is at any health food store in the refrig!
also, cold pressed olive oil–the ‘cold pressed’ part(written on the label only if the product is RAW) is the key. ‘virgin’ means nothing to me.
eating raw oils helps the skin. and rebuilds the body, but do not over do any one kind of anything when eating raw. Variety is the key.
as for skin, i put coconut oil on my skin because the skin absorbs whatever you put on it; and that is why raw coconut oil is in my skin care….
along with tamanu nut oil…..
and aloe vera!!
so goooooood for the skin.
please do not do any diet with out the help of a doctor who knows you and your health….
hope this helps!

I only use it when I work and at that point, I cannot stop the artists from using what they are comfortable with.
If I were working everyday, I would bring my stash of Tony and Tina.
But since they were bought by Este Lauder, they have been shut down.
If my line does ok, I will make a raw foundation; but as of now, I do not know of any I can suggest.

you know Rachel,
i had very bad TMJ problems caused by a dentist i went to in NYC.
i was doing Dancing with the Stars in Italy and i kept losing my balance. and one day i got hurt.
this was the best thing that happened to me. it forced me to go to an Osteopath. He found out that i was leaning to one side and that was what was throwing off my balance. he then brought me to a dentist who worked with sports men.
he gave me a mouth piece that i was to wear for 2 weeks (!!) at all times except when eating. and after the first hours, i was feeling weirdly happy…..
during the two weeks i found i did not want to take the piece out of my mouth.
after the two weeks i went back to the dentist, and he took the piece out and told me to bit down. MAN!!!! what i felt was unbelievable! i could feel every place my bit was off.
he then slightly adjusted my bit.
and i did this whole scenario two more times and Viola! my bit was better, my pain in my jaw went away, my TMJ clicking was gone and my balance was back!
and even if in the beginning i thought i was being hood-winked, i wasn’t!
since italy is socialist health care, i did not pay a penny! so they would not have told me to do this if it did not need to be done just to make the money!
my point here is, perhaps you need someone who can help to see if your problem is your bit. my dentist in NYC told me that i would adjust to my teeth.
and i just did not ever do that! my TMJ got worse…..and my balance was off. causing me to hurt myself dancing…..which caused me to find the cure for my TMJ!
long story short:
you may need a specialist to help you with this TJM thing. i mean, even filling a tooth can throw your bite off!
worth checking out?
anyway, i read Glow Magazine last week and there is the Gelb Center on Madison Ave in NYC with doctors who specialize in TMJ problems. look up Glow mag online–the article is there.
anyway, to actually answer your question:
you can do Juices, too- with a juicer.
can you eat soft things? perhaps Manna bread? the crust is cooked but the inside is Raw and soft…
I mean, there is not much else i can think of. How does one eat without chewing?
perhaps some soft green bars like Lara bars or organic bars?
they sell them in health food stores or whole foods.
hope this helps?
i feel so bad about your TMJ, quality of life is surely lessened.
keep me posted?

Truthfully, if i was not a model and not needing to work with so many hair dressers and didn’t have to look good on the spur of the moment, I would use henna.
In fact, I bought and used it (from the Morrocco method) but it does not stay. changes color under the lights and washes out so quickly with the hair sprays that I am compelled to let hair dressers use on my hair when I work.
So, alas, I have to color it; although it is my natural color!
And seriously, I would probably NOT need to color it but a hair
dresser who colored my hair for a character in a film RUINED my hair and I had to take all the color OUT! he mistakenly put a 4 in instead of a 7 with a 4 to warm it. turned my hair BLACK!
I try to tell young girls to be careful with what you do to your hair. You may have to do it for the rest of your life!
I have a few greys, but nothing I would need to color for!
Thank you raw food…..

Dear Carol,?
Congratulations on your appearance on the Dr. Oz Show! It was incredibly inspiring to understand that you overcame your struggles with weight and food and take such great care of your body. You truly are beautiful inside and out! Your appearance on the show showed me that genetics is important and does play a big part in terms of our health, looks and aging processes but we can absolutely take control of our lifestyle and make the most out what we have. I’m inspired to take great care of my own body and hope to also age as gracefully! I also wish that I could grow to be as tall as you! It was a funny moment on the show when you mentioned that it seemed to you that you just kept on growing until the age of 25! Did you have a late growth spur? You also mentioned that you lost weight and by the time you were on the Sports Illustrated Cover you were at 5 foot 10 you were 115 pounds. In order to get into that supermodel shape did you practice some kind of special sports or exercise program? And in order to maintain that long and slender supermodel look during all of these years, what kind of fitness exercises do you practice? It would be great if you could share some more supermodel tips on that! Thank you very much for the inspiration Carol!!!!?

Rita,
More importantly, what do I do now to keep in Model shape!
The point I was making in the Dr. Oz show was that I was
starving to be thin.
And by starving to be thin, I gave myself all kinds of
health problems. You name it, I most likely had it!
At 34, I was a mess and then i found RAW!
It was the miracle in my life that not only saved my life,
it gave me my life back. Because if you are starving, you
are always hungry, grouchy, and in ill health as the body
NEEDS food to keep it healthy and repairing itself.
Man does not live on pills alone … and neither does
woman!
We need to start educating ourselves as to what the body
needs and then to give it what it needs.
Raw has been so amazing that I am compelled to speak
about it and surely I would not be here if I had not switched my
eating habits and gotten healthy on RAW.
When I was 115 lbs, I was too thin. In fact, Calvin Klein cut me out of a commercial saying I was too thin!
Imagine? I was too thin…
Believe me, there is NO WAY to grow old gracefully if you are not taking care of your health first!!
Hope this inspires you…..

P.S. Always have a doctor follow any diet change until you
are educated about it!

purest form– along with Coconut oil and Aloe Vera.
It is an all Raw and Chem-free line!
I sell on TSC (The Shopping Channel) in Canada and i will

Hope this helps!

ps MY OWN SISTER asked this question! I said, “Silly girl

so she switched from the normal to sensitive skin care to
the anti-aging i gave her!!

Hello Carol!
My friend brought me a raw book, and even thought I eat really clean, and lots and lots of veggies, I decided I wanted to try a RAW diet! Problem is, I do swimwear modeling (all the pictures on my site are old… new ones on facebook*Jamie Sheridan) and I spend about 2 hours in the gym a day, lifting heavy weights! I’m waiting to feel great like everyone says I should… but I feel worse. I feel really weak, light headed and out of it. I need my protein. What does you hockey player boyfriend eat? I just read your book after I saw you on Dr. Oz.. I didn’t realize you wrote a book, but after I saw your beautiful face, and you said how raw was amazing, that’s all I needed to hear… especially since I’m into anti-aging… and I’m always reading health books. I immediately went to the book store and bought your book and four others on raw! There is a lot of conflicting info out there, that’s for sure! But one thing I can never seem to get info on is what an athlete should eat to stay strong. I just went to a new health supermarket today and a nice raw foodist sold me his favorite protein powder (raw), a carb powder (raw), and a superfood powder (raw). I also bought a bunch of fresh dehydrated items, since I don’t have a dehydrator yet. Are you sure I don’t have to count calories? The items besides the fresh fruits and veggies seem to be calorie dense. I have a shoot coming up. I just don’t feel right. Please help me with the protein issue. I work out a lot!
Thanks again for being so inspirational. You look absolutely beautiful and I’ve been drinking a kale shake everyday to keep my skin healthy to be like you! Thanks, Jamie
Btw, Everything I learn and practice myself, I pass along to my family and friends and then they try it. So, I’m happy to say that I teach what you’ve taught me.
O, and modeling advice to get more work would greatly appreciated! xoxo

Hi,
so you did not say whether you are eating vegan.
I am NOT vegan.
my boyfriend eats carpaccio, tartare, and seared steak.
And although seared is not completely raw, i write in
my books that Dr. Brantley told me if you eat 75-100%
raw you can change your health!
you certainly need a wide variety of everything. Not just
olive oil, but udo’s choice oil (which is nut oils), fish oils,
and all the veggies of the rainbow.
I have never been, and if you read my forwards from Dr Gonzales, you will see that i do not advise being a vegan.
does this at all help?
also, if you read my first book, Eating in the Raw, i told
my story and how Green Powder was such a help to bring me
back to health.
as for calories, If you are nutrition-ed, i am told that
you should not be able to over eat; besides the fact that you work out all the time.
Now i know that detoxing can make you feel weak and
not well, but i also know that without fish i am weak and
without meat my boyfriend is weak.
you know, this is why diet books always advise a doctor to
follow you…..so he can answer your questions specifically!
let me know how you are doing?
and please get someone to follow you…..!
thx!

Hi mariCarmen,
i did answer you before this, but the server did not post so many of my responses that i am sad.
I had told you then that i have heard the EXCALIBUR is good.
but you know, it is hard for me to tell you how to pick a dehydrator. that is such a personal thing.
I mean, for example, how many people do you make food for?
Do you want to make a lot of different things at once so you may need more shelves?
These are things only you can answer. so there is a website called:
http://www.associatedcontent.com/article6127before_purchasing_a_food_dehydrator.html?cat=51
But you might also try:http://ezinearticles.com/?Food-Dehydrator—Where-and-How-To-Buy&id=640043
Enjoy dehydrating!! it is fun, and saves a ton of money!!!

Hi Carol,
You were on the shopping channel a couple of weeks ago and I purchased some of your skincare items – for the third time. I always buy natural or organic products and like your concept of using the best ingredients in their purest (”raw”) state.
I bought your kit with the two facial masques, and the kit with day cream, a small sample of night cream, and your lip balm.
I was especially impressed with your lip balm after I first applied it as it made my lips tingle (probably from the peppermint oil) and gave my lips a sheen as if I had applied lip gloss; but then I read the ingredients…you lip balm has dimethicone and mineral oil – both of which one can hardly classify as natural OR organic.
As a consumer who has been an ingredient / label reader for a very long time I am wondering why you have the above -noted ingredients in your product(s), especially as you market your products as natural and organic.
Please explain as I was shocked to say the least.
Thanks,
Andrea Francis

OK Andrea,
I answered you two weeks ago and it for some reason it did not go thru.
Here was what i wrote:
Hi Andrea,
So, i am sorry i did not get your question but i want to tell you that you are right AND you are wrong! LOL
please see the response from my partner which i have posted below!
thank you,
CA
Dear Andrea,
Although we may not like it, those two ingredients ARE natural. One is silicone and the other is petroleum jelly and they are also RAW.
Our formulator goes by the FDA and USDA guidelines for natural ingredients and both conform. However, we hold ourselves to a higher standard and we just don’t want to use those types of ingredients.
We don’t sell the lip balm as a single product. We included it in a kit at a shopping company’s request. We have not purchased it any further and have stopped using it.
As far as any other ingredients, let me know what ingredients you are speaking of and we will address them individually. All of our ingredients conform to our raw directive.
At this point i must further say that there are at least two ways to get an ingredient: Natural or Synthetic. And no matter how they are derived, they are listed the SAME way on a label. So you cannot tell if they are natural OR synthetic!
Therefore, many ingredients that are naturally occurring, seem to get negative publicity because their synthetic partners are not as good.
There are always websites that will point out the negatives of every single ingredient. Water, for example, comes up on several sites with negative, cancer causing properties. As do half of the essential minerals our body needs.
Anything in large doses, can probably be harmful. Too much protein, too much iron, too much sodium….etc. In the right quantities, nature provides for itself.
Ultimately, you have to make a choice and decision about what you put in your body. Get information from multiple sources and be certain of how any study is done:
For example, if we took a person and pumped 2 gallons of water into them very quickly, they would become hyponitremic. It isn’t that water is bad, it is the study that was incorrect;y directed. And unfortunately, this happens all the time and negative information flows.
Anyway, as I said, this item-even if the ingredients are RAW and Natural-has been discontinued.
Thank you again for your questions.

Hi Carol,
We met in 2004 at NYC’s Annual Spring Fashion Show, back when you were promoting your first book, Eating in the Raw. At your book signing, I asked you to make the book out to my mom Galina, saying that she struggled with diets all her life and that the book would be of great interest to her (I remember you mentioning that you have a friend Galina, just a side note). But unfortunately the book did not impact my mom’s life as much as it did mine.
So 3 years after meeting you, I met a very special individual who further spiked my interest in nutrition and got me eating Raw Paleo. I also called up my mom right then to request that she give me your book to read. I enjoyed it so much that I even used it as one of my primary archives to write my college design thesis at Parsons. I had designed and built a vending cart that would be used to deliver fresh fruits and veggies from the Union Square Green Market to students at Parsons. http://www.design21sdn.com/people/15128/posts/1546?order=Chronological
Since graduation I’ve moved back home to California and have been trying my best to adhere to a raw diet, even when family and friends don’t necessary support it. Lately I’ve been thinking of ways I can educate people about nutrition and fitness through design. I really enjoy art and helping people. Similar to how I built a shopping cart in college, I was hoping to use design to further develop something more solid, make it accessible to communities located within close proximity to either Farmer’s Markets or community gardens. Starting next week, I’ve signed up to volunteer at my local community garden teaching children about nutrition. Doing this, will give me a sense of the type of products that interest children – products that hopefully would get them (at a young age) to really care for their health and that of the environment.
I am also wondering if you’ve thought about other ways of sharing your practice – perhaps starting a company with a campaign that targets specifically young women like me (I’m 24). I have friends, my age, who already suffer from bowel problems and yeast infections. Gross. I would love to jump on the bandwagon of helping young women realize the benefits of eating unprocessed foods that will ultimately make them feel and look good, rather than slowly break them down. So if you are interested in possibly employing a Young Enthusiastic Designer who is passionate about nutrition and fitness, please contact me! If starting a campaign is a proposition that is too far-fetched for you, then please share your insights/ideas about what steps I can take as a young design/health enthusiast entrepreneur. I can use any help I can find. You’ve touched my life, and I would love to do the same for others

I always check a couple of times a year to see if you’re into hockey, me having a crush. You say you’re busy so I’ll ask the one question you might have the unbiased answer for. Whenever I eat a lot vegies with water for like a week I find myself not being able to sleep. In other words a healthy over 50 lifestyle leads to insomnia. Any ideas on sleeping besides Ambein, that beer, valerie root or going to bed and waking up at the same time?

No seriously, if you know of some magical maja solution other than make yourself tired, Ambein, valerie root or that beer to help me sleep, I’m up for suggestions. I really though shouldn’t hope for better than recent sleep the past couple of months, it’s working out pretty good. You see me biggest problem, or at least has been, with sleep is like I said. If I eat right with lots of vegs and mostly water only, my body clicks, I feel wonderful, then I can’t sleep. Luckily Ambein plays no how was you day favorites, it simply does real good with sleep. Not so much with valerie, with valerie you might sleep though with a what was that. As for that crush there’s a simple solution, ignore you.

We all have the little girl, little man in our souls. When making out with Carol on the sofa don’t forget her mom in the back room has a soul too. If they make a like a virgin Charlie Chaplin movie of the mom years after, not seeing any of the girls for years, and the mom is younger than any of us ever were when together, don’t let that fool you, even if that sofa is where you or I was touched for the very first time because her mom had that moment too, somewhere, or there wouldn’t be a Carol. Sure it will fool the planet . Same principle as seeing Carol in a wedding dress years after not seeing her at all for years. Very few shows deal with souls, plenty on faith. Star Trek touches on that with the question does Data have a soul? However let’s not forget the question of the moment here. Does Carol Alt have a sleep solution for me?

Hello Carol,
My name is Jan and currently a founding member (Albany Vegetarian Network, Inc.) and organizer of our 4th annual NY’s Capital Region Vegetarian Expo taking place on Oct.4, 2010 at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center in Albany NY.
I am always looking for products such as Raw Essentials to bring to the expo – this is a perfit fit!
Our goal is to promote the global health benefits of green sustainable living, environmental awareness, compassion for animals and all beings and to highlight their relationship to a plant based lifestyle.
This year, my dauther Kristin, and also our marketing coordinator is organizing the first ‘vegan’ fashion show at the expo. The fashion line will be presented by a new young lady in the business that runs Vaute Couture’s winter apparel. http://www.vautecouture.com/
I was wonderng if you would be interested in donating a Raw Essentials starter kit. We could incorporate the mention of your product during the show. This is a great opportunity to educate folks about a wonderful vegan option for their skin care needs.
I do apologize for going on and taking your time to inquire of your interest in our event. I find it exciting to continually become aware of products such as yours and the impact you are making as an individual having a raw food lifestyle. This is so so wonderful. My husband and I had the great fortune recently to spend a few days at the Tree of Life in AZ run by Dr. Cousens and now we are trying to incorporate more raw organic food into our diet although we have been vegan for several years. I am excited to say our website is being revamped but the current site will give you an idea about the expo and what we are about.
I just ordered a couple starter kits for myself and daugher from HSN and looking forward to receive them.
I appreciate your consideration of my request and apologize again for my lengthly message I have sent you.
Please take care and have a great day!!

Hi Carol,
This is my second email/letter to you. I’m writing again because you have not responded to my initial “letter” sent May 17, 2010 (see above) where I asked you about some questionable ingredients in your skincare product line “RAW”, which you purport is made with “raw” and completely “natural” ingredients.
Well, dimethicone and mineral oil – ingredients in your lip balm – are not “natural” ingredients. I look forward to you correcting me if I am wrong. Furthermore, I noted that these ingredients – plus some other questionable elements – are used in some of your other products, as well.
I have been waiting for a response from you on this matter since the 17th of May and I must say that the absence of a response from you is making me very wary about your products.
At the least I intend to email the shopping channel re same in regards to false advertising practices. In addition, you will most certainly lose me as a customer.
Hope to hear from you soon.

Hi Carol!
Your Playboy article and ‘Eating…’ first introduced me to raw food about 1.5 years ago. It has changed the way I eat forever. I’ve had varying percentages of raw since (from four month long smoothie feasts to 100% SAD (and I love salads and smoothies no matter WHAT, so I don’t know what I was thinking)), but, as someone with sinus/weight/depression issues, I have always felt better when I was consuming more raw foods. The one thing missing, though, is a an online community, a forum where practitioners of the form of raw you’ve made famous (including fish/dairy/eggs/meat products, NON-vegan, NON-vegetarian) can discuss their trials and tribulations, share information with each other (reputable places to get raw dairy, recipes)! There are other raw communities out there, but they are often strictly vegan and some go so far as to make discussing the consumption of raw meats or raw milk an offense so great you can be banned from their message boards!
Do you have any forums you recommend? Would you consider creating your own or supporting efforts to create one in your name (with credit given where credit is due, of course)?
Thank you!

I second this Carol. There is still not enough support from raw foodists who advocage eating meat in the raw sense.
Also, I have been struggling with a very bad intestine due to parasites. I am afraid of eating seared fish before freezing. Some of the worst parasites come from undercooded fish and I feel I would be the most vulnerable to this because of my GI tracts’ state right now. I have heard that it is better to first freeze the fish to kill the bad bugs if you want to sear. Otherwise always cook well which of course most healthy raw foodist just won’t do. Can you please give out an opinion on this i could really use the help here. I cannot do the vegan approach, at least not yet..
Thank you so much for all that you do

Susan,
I sear fish.
And i sear meat.
Plenty of restaurants sell rare meat and fish. and plenty of Japanese restaurants sell raw fish.
I am not telling you to do something that you do not want to do. You must feel safe and you must buy your fish from a good supply source. Always let whoever you buy from know you are eating it seared or rare.
By the way, I did a parasite cleanse from my doctor.
(Yes, you should always work with a doctor)
It did wonders…..
Hope this helps point you in the right direction.

I have been reading through your books and website. I am happy to learn from someone who lives what they preach! You have talked about how your skin had suffered prior to raw and the rejuvenating power of raw foods to the skin. I wonder if you can elaborate on that a bit. I have thin skin and have started to see capillaries and pores develop. Can a raw diet help these things fade? If so, are there specific foods you would recommend?
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Jojo,
I guess i do not want to sound like a commercial, but i used my skin care line and i have used it for many years to help with some of the problems you are talking about–esp. big pores. (I use my toner for that problem) dryness and wrinkles!
That line is RAWESSENTIALS.com
Because my line is raw, it gives great results and it “feeds” the skin what it needs to be healthy.
I am not a doctor and you are not right in front of me where i can see you, but i can truthfully say that the first steps i took towards great skin were to boost my health and then everything followed–including great skin. I always suggest eating the colors of the rainbow- red, greens, yellow, orange- all the veggies! and of course cold pressed oils helped my skin a lot.
but do not overdo anything.
I love it when a makeup artist says,”you have amazing skin.”
I feel if i did not go raw, i would not have that great skin.
So, i can only talk from my experience but i hope this helps guide you towards what you need!
Best Wishes,

Hi Carol,
I am the Wheatley alumni, you spoke with at Whole Foods on Saturday.
I’m impressed with you and Xocai chocolate. Recently, I visited the South of Cancun (near theTulum ruins) and met some great Mayan people. I loved hearing about their history and all natural, many raw healing remedies.
As a matter of fact, I met a humble Mayan botanist that showed me how he extracts medicine from plants to cure all sorts of health issues. He is currently writing a book, and seemed to be interested in any support he could receive. I think there is great potential in this area. The Mayan people have passed their secrets only among themselves for centuries, and the rest of the world truly does not know much about this area. There is a mysterious
omen that the Mayan people will come forward with their knowledge in the year 2012, as this is the year their ancestors have predicted the end of the world as we know it today. I know that as a serious student of yoga and meditation, I was truly moved and intrigued.

Hi Andrea,
How interesting! And we are cutting down the Rainforests!
Maybe the year 2012 will be the year that we are reborn into kindness, health, spirituality…..but hey, then maybe i am dreaming!
i just wanted you to know that your email got lost because you entered into a section that goes to my manager. it then was sent back and went into a que to go online. that took a couple of weeks!
Anyway, i hope you are having great success with your new demonstration–
wishing you all the best, contact me anytime.
