Posted on August 22, 2008 | by Attention Interactive LLC
Carol Alt, already a successful author (”Eating In The Raw”, “The Raw 50″), has now turned her considerable writing skills to fiction. Her debut novel, “This Year’s Model” (Avon A, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers, ISBN 97800611366246), goes on sale August 26, 2008.
Loosely based upon Carol’s own brilliant and unparalleled career in the world of high fashion modeling, “This Year’s Model” follows the exploits, both professional and personal, of a beautiful young woman as she enters and conquers the intriguing world of agencies, photographers, runways and romance.
This novel is a “must read” for anyone interested in pursuing a career in the fashion industry, as well as for their families, or for anyone who’s just plain curious about this very glamorous - and to most people, mysterious - life.
Attached you’ll find the press release from publisher, Avon A, which offers more information on this fascinating novel, as well as some tips from Carol on how to safely navigate a budding career as a model.

Hello, i was watching you on t.v. this morning and i just wanted to know Is it worth spending all the money it cost for modeling and t.v. commercial classes to be successful in the modeling and acting career. I just recentely put my 7 year old daughter in the classes at John Robert Powers Modeling Agency in Portland, Oregon. I have never had experience in this type of field before so its very new to me and my family. My daughter has that nature talent with her beautiful looks and shes loves to be the center of attention with everything. She loves singing, dancing, walking the run way. She has only been in class about 2 months and has matured so much since she first started her classes. You really inspired me this morning about what you were saying about being a model or actress… Thanks so much
Maureen says:
I am a model for Barbizon and I am very intersted in fashion and modeling.
My highschool guidence counsler told me that you had a interview on the radio station warm 101.3. (Rochester station.) She told me you have a new book out ( I can’t wait to read it) and she said you are looking for a teenage model for a cover? I am very intersted! I contacted the radio station and they gave me your website!
Thank you!!

HOLD on…sorry. To all the MOTHERS thinking about putting their kids up for adoption in the “Modeling industry” think twice. I was a Male model…quite successful. Lived in Milan, Paris, NYC, Germany, and was born in LA. I have seen it all! Walked for Dolce & Gabbana, dinners with Cavalli, you name it. 99% of the guys in the industry dont even make enough to get by. I had many friends who had to STEAL money or food to eat. The market is flooded with “Ok” looking girls….who might get by check to check but after years and years of trying to be a top model…they will probably fail and be stuck where??? Square one of course. In which I have seen girls marry the rich A holes they met on the party scene…usually the same guys that supplied us with drugs. What im trying to get at is NOT EVERYONE is good looking….be realistic…a cute american looking girl probably wont do well. So dont waste her time. On the other hand girls from eastern europe, aussi land, and such have a better chance with such unique features.I repeat UNIQUE FEATURES! It broke my heart coming back to the model apartment (Which cramped in about 20 of us) and tell them how I had 6 shows that day and had my own personal driver when not one person had a single show that entire season thus leaving them with few options for getting home. Usually it being a slave to the low end spectrum of the market or having mama get them out of this bind.
This also was by far the best time of my life. im 24 now, I played it smart but got lucky…in a sense.
If you wanna know if your girl or boy has what it takes to do BIG THINGS then go to Models.com and click the “Top 50″ models tab and compare your kid. simple as that

Dear Ms. Alt:
I just had my first book published earlier this fall, a very short work on the seven last words of Jesus from the cross, and would like to send you a copy. Is there an available address where it would reach you if you are interested?
John
carol alt says:
Justin,
Thank you!
My Point Exactly!
The modeling industry uses people who do not have strong family ties and moral compasses- they chew them up and spit them out.
I had hoped my book would do exactly what you are telling them!
Think twice, stay strong!
But the truth is, you cannot stop a girl who wants to try to model. All we can hope to do is guide her well…..
(Oh, and same for boys, too!)
It was a different time when I started…..it has gotten really crazy out there due to all the media blitz.
I hope that you have found something else in life that gives you that “buzz”
and thank you for writing in!!
Wishing you the best,
Carol Alt

Thank you for this offer,
I am in Italy for the next three months and think perhaps that sending it to Ford Models is the best idea…

carol alt says:
Hi Robin,
I am in Italy at the moment-And well, for the next three months!!
I do speaking engagements thru Harper Collins Speakers Bureau….
At this moment, that may be the best way to get me….
if not, send me snail mail to Ford Models at 111 Fifth Ave NYC, NY 10003 and when i return, I will respond…
I am asking you to do this, either way, because i do not want to forget in three/four months when i get home!!
All the best,
Carol Alt
carol alt says:
Maureen,
I know this is a bit late because the cover model was already picked by our online voting process….
But i wanted to personally thank you for your letter and your interest.
I wish you all the best with your future career….
if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to write me again….
All the best,
Carol Alt
PS if you do write me again, make sure you write that I told you to write me so that you get published…..it would be so terrible if you wrote with a question and your letter was not forwarded to me!!
carol alt says:
Hi Katie,
I am sorry it has taken me so long to answer your letter…..
I am in Italy shooting a show and got a bit caught up in rehearsal etc.
I understand that you have a daughter who likes to entertain. I do not think that putting her in the John Powers School is such a bad thing. Especially if you see that it has helped her in the past couple of months.
However:
You must remember that i started my career at 18 years old. I had a normal childhood and schooling-i was even in the Army for a year thru ROTC!
When i started to model, i was pretty much able to go it on my own and i had pretty much developed my personality.
Please, Please, Please! Keep your eye on your young daughter. The reason I wrote the fiction book on modeling (This Year’s Model) was to try to help young girls to successfully navigate the shark infested waters by keeping a moral compass…..Now, OK, I know that many professions have sharks in their waters, but so few professions have such young seekers.
Give her all the support you can and make sure she knows that if she decides to do something else, you will support that, too!
My dad told me that i could “always come home and it would not be looked at as a failure-just an experience”
and that gave me the strength to say “no” to some things that i felt were “iffy”!
Many time girls say “OK” to things even if they know it might be iffy because they hope it will pay off big.
Remember, that a career is like a brick wall…..every little brick adds to the strength of that wall.
there is no one BIG BRICK that will make a career. a missed opportunity can not destroy a career- but seizing on the wrong opportunity can be the worst!!
So choose wisely for your daughter and love her and support her-
and teach her well…..
I wish you and your daughter all the best,
Carol Alt
carol alt says:
Hey jennifer,
I am sorry, I must have missed your wonderful letter!!
I am so glad you liked the book!!
My agent says that I tell so many stories and make people laugh and she wanted to capture that in a book!
I, however, found that i wanted an opportunity to teach girls how to navigate the field.
Well, we combined the two ideas with “This Year’s Model”
So, I am so glad you liked it and thank you for your Review!!!
All the best,
Carol Alt

Samantha says:
Hey! First I want to say I LOVED the book. I really felt like I got a better look at what the modeling world, and it’s not all that you see on ANTM or anything. The book was a real eye opener for me, but encouraged me more to want to become a model. I liked at the end that you had the tips, and the Mac is a character people can relate to, especially me. Thank you for writing such a great book! Hope there are more coming! Love, Sam<3

carol alt says:
Hi sam,
(hope you don’t mind me calling you Sam?)
I am happy you like my book. i do have another book based on the same character, that comes out in August! it is called Model Incorporated. I wanted to show that you do not have to be like the girls on America’s Next Top Model to make it big. i think i made it and i have been here, in the modeling world for 30 years.
i think there is a difference between making it in a flash and disappearing and making it and staying. most of the girls that i know that make it are strong business people. it seems to me, from my experience, that the girls who are crazy party people rarely make it. i mean there is the phenom now and again but on the whole, this is a business and i tried to portray it as such to give young women, like you, who want to come into this business, a leg up by telling what to somewhat expect.
i mean, i cannot tell you all that will happen in this business, it is an individual experience, but some guidelines, i think, can help you out!
remember, always try to take the HIGH ROAD-
all the best with your caeer-whatever you choose!
